Football Field Claimed by Girls
The first girls' interprimary school soccerleague kicked off 17 March. Seven public and private schools haveenlisted in the competition.
Play opened with drawn matches between Savannahand Cayman Prep and East End and Bodden Town. On Thursday 24 MaySavannah defeated Bodden Town 2-1 and North Side scored threegoals against a scoreless East End.
Interprimary sports co-ordinator RonnieRoach notes that in past years several girls had shown interestin joining the boys' league during the Christmas term, but thatmany were unable to do so because of the conflict with netballseason which also takes place in the same term.
Savannah manager Audrey Leahong says herteam is enjoying the opportunity to take part in what has beenuntil now a mostly male sport.
"In the past the girls would play withthe boys during break and lunch periods. We saw the potentialthere and were very pleased when Mr Roach suggested a league mightbe held over the summer term. While the boys play cricket duringthis time, the girls usually have no activities scheduled. Todate I have to say that we are meeting our goals, which are toenjoy the game and do our best," Mrs Leahong declares.
Games will be played each Thursday afternoon,at school fields around the Island.
Meanwhile boys from schools including WestBay, George Town, Red Bay, Savannah, Bodden Town, North Side,East End, the Lighthouse School, Cayman Prep and St Ignatius havetaken to the cricket pitch.
Competition began on 18 May and continuesFriday afternoons through 15 June. Jet Around Cayman will sponsora one-day cricket festival on 16 June. A knockout competitionis also scheduled for later in the month.
Mr Roach credits members of the communityfor their support of the young athletes. In addition to the JetAround Cayman sponsorship, several soccer and netball teams arecoached or assisted by community volunteers.
He invites members of the public who wishto support their school teams to attend future matches.
