Cable & Wireless hasagain donated funds to cricket this time in the amount of$2,000 to the Cayman Islands Cricket Association for the Cable& Wireless Primary Schools Cricket League.
The telecommunications provideralso sponsored the cost of T-shirts for all the players. Fundsare to be used to purchase trophies, provide refreshments at gamesand for other incidentals.
Coach Theo Cuffy says theleague, scheduled for 17 May to 14 June, got off to a great startwith the Lighthouse School winning for the first time. In thefirst set of games Lighthouse School stole the show while playingagainst St. Ignatius Catholic School, Red Bay Primary School defeatedGeorge Town Primary School and Savannah Primary School won againstCayman Prep School.
The Lighthouse School enteredthe primary schools cricket games last year for the first timeever, Coach Cuffy said. The schools cricket games are not aboutwinning or losing, he stressed, "it is about learning thegame and learning to interact with each other. The LighthouseSchool did not win any of the matches last year but won theirfirst game this year."
Coach Cuffy explained thatthe Cayman Islands Cricket Association "wants to spread thegame as much as possible and use cricket as a medium for socialdevelopment in primary school students. It is about punctuality,attire, communication. When you put it all together this is disciplinefor the students."
Ten primary schools areparticipating in the league, which is divided into two groups.Group 'A' is comprised of George Town, Red Bay, North Side, EastEnd and Bodden Town primary schools, while group 'B' includesLighthouse School, Cayman Prep, St. Ignatius, Savannah and WestBay primary schools.
A round robin of matchesis scheduled within the respective groups, Coach Cuffy added,and the two winning teams will go to the semi-finals. Each schoolwill be required to pick its best player to participate in a six-a-sidegame, which is schedule for the day of the presentation of trophiesfunction set for June. A confirmed date will be announced soon.
