What you can'tdo to your hair!

Gary Callan

I am constantly being askedif hair will do certain things so I thought I'd put a few of themore common questions together for this week's article.

A lot of people seem tobe under the misunderstanding that whatever we do to your hairchemically, the hair will remain the same. Every time we use achemical on your hair such as colour, perm solution or relaxer,we are altering its structure.

Permanent colours don'tsimply apply a coat over your natural colour, they replace thepigment with a synthetic one, thus changing the appearance. Manypeople believe that a colour stripper will remove the 'false'colour and you will revert back to your natural tresses. Not true.A colour stripper will remove the colour but your own colour isno longer there, so you will be left with a bleached out look.We will then have to apply another colour trying to match yournatural look.

As people grow older andbegin to realise that the jet black hair they've been 'touchingup' no longer looks 'natural', they often try to strip out theblack. Hoping that they will be left with grey hair. The onlyway to allow your grey to grow though is by allowing it to growthrough. There are no short cuts, except cutting your hair veryshort. (You may have to read this twice to get the right inflection)

The same is true for relaxedhair. I've heard lots of ways to 'remove' relaxer from the hair.Shampooing in beer, applying steam, bathing in salt water, andmany more silly remedies. I've said this before and I'll probablysay it again, "once the relaxer is shampooed off, it is goneforever. What remains is the effect of the relaxer, chemicallystraightened hair." Nothing can change that.

Just as a lot of peoplethink that some of these processes are not permanent, there arethose of you who believe you can do some of these temporarily.I don't want to burst your bubble, but here are a few things thatcan not be done on a temporary basis. Lightening you hair, chemicallyrelaxing your hair, perming your hair, and my favourite, blondehighlights.

You must remember that hairis dead by the time it reaches the surface of the scalp. Anythingwe do to alter its appearance or texture will last until thathair grows out. So please think long and hard before to rush offand give yourself a couple of bleached streaks for the party tonight. They'll be around a lot longer than your hangover.

If anyone has any problemswith their hair or scalp, please feel free to come and see mefor a free consultation, at my salon in the Strand. (949 0022)
