Island games featured on the new Cayman Islands' postage stamp issue

Cayman's newest stamp issue featuring island games will be released tomorrow, Tuesday 27 May, at Savannah Primary School's Child Month celebrations.

The five-stamp issue depicts early childhood games played in Cayman such as skipping, maypole dancing, gigs, hopscotch, and marbles.

In days gone by, children pulled bay-vine out of the sand and used it as rope for skipping which is depicted on the 15-cent stamp. Maypole dancing, which was also very popular and traditionally played at garden parties, is featured on the 20-cent stamp.

A gig, otherwise known as a peg top, was spun by winding string or cord around the top and then throwing it to unwind the string and let it spin. This old-fashioned game is shown on the 25-cent stamp while hopscotch, which is still played by elementary school children today, is pictured on the 30-cent stamp.

Collecting and trading colourful glass balls added to the excitement of playing the trendy game, marbles, which is shown on the one dollar stamp. Children played hard so they wouldn't have to give up their prized marbles such as red or blue crystals.

This unique stamp set is available at post offices throughout the Cayman Islands and at the Philatelic Bureau, Seven Mile Beach Post Office. Don't miss out on this must have collection! For more information contact the Bureau on tel: 345-946-4757, fax: 345-949-4113 or e-mail: cistamps@candw.ky.
