When a woman is expectinga child, she is full of excitement, apprehension, and joy. Unfortunately, this miracle of life can also be the cause of some not so pleasantdiscomforts, like swelling, back pain, mood swings, and achingmuscles, just to name a few. Although some things are just a partof the process, many of the unwelcome effects of pregnancy canbe reduced with massage therapy.
Some of the physical benefitsof prenatal massage are; reducing excess fluid, alleviating musclepain, and releasing excess joint strain and tension. Of course, there are also the emotional benefits. Having a massage can relaxan expectant mother and allow her to take some time to enjoy theexperience. So much time and energy goes into the preparationof the baby's arrival, that mom-to-be may feel over worked, overtired and in need of some TLC.
Massage is also very helpfulduring birth. A massage therapist can show the birthing coachsome simple techniques to help the labouring mother cope withthe stress and pain of delivery. In addition to prenatal treatment, massage therapy is also effective in helping a woman's body returnto normal, after the baby's birth.
Now, as beneficial as massagecan be, there are circumstances that would contraindicate theuse of massage during pregnancy. Always check with your doctorbefore getting a massage and share any important information withyour massage therapist. A few things to know is that no massageshould be received during the first three months of pregnancy, and women with high blood pressure or diabetes may not be ableto have a massage.
Thankfully, many of thecontraindications for prenatal massage therapy are not long term.
During a prenatal massage, specific bolstering takes pressure off of the clients' back andknees, which are very stressed when carrying the extra weightof a growing baby. The client may also be bolstered in a sidelying position to allow the therapist to treat the lower back, which is a common area of prenatal discomfort. Having the legsand feet massaged is also a welcomed treatment for a pregnantclient, and although deep pressure and reflexology points shouldnot be used during pregnancy, appropriate techniques can effectivelyrelieve aches and relax muscles. You deserve a break, once thebaby comes, time may not be easy to find!
Remember that giving a massagegift certificate to an expecting, or new mom, is a gift of healthand relaxation that will be greatly appreciated.
