Drama Society's "Haywire" Opens Today

Kevin Redfern and Janine Moss plan a romantic tryst in the Cayman Drama Society's production of "Haywire" opening tomorrow night at the Prospect Playhouse.
Even the best laid plans go "Haywire" in the Cayman Drama Society's production of Eric Chappell's comedy opening tonight at the Prospect Playhouse.
The cleverly witty drama is co-directed by Susan Howe and Regina Oliver. For Howe, it's her first venture into directing after acting in many plays. After committing herself to direct a play for the 2002 season, Howe had a difficult time deciding which production to do.
"I had read many, many plays when I came upon a synopsis of Haywire," she says, "After I read it, I stopped looking. It was very quick right from the start, and very humorous."
The script's storyline revolves around main character Alec Firth's plan for a romantic tryst in Spain with his young mistress Liz. Anything that can go wrong, does go wrong as one family obstacle after another threaten to thwart Alec's scheme - with rib-tickling effects.
Beyond the one-liners, Howe feels what really makes the play richer is its underlying reality. "Beneath the obvious humour is story about a man coming to grips with his life," says Howe, "There's his dysfunctional relationship with his children, failure at his job, a marriage that has lost its romance, and the cold hard fact that while he had his back turned, he reached middle age."
"I hope people leave the theatre feeling they saw something more than expected in the play," says Howe, "It's funny and it's a slice of life, all in one serving."
The fine cast includes Kevin Redfern as Alec, veteran actress Wendy Moore as Alec's aging mother Phoebe, Juliet Austin as wife Maggie, Janine Moss as Liz, Suzanne Stewart as daughter Mandy, and Ian Morgan as son Jamie.
Producer Phil Pace brings his detail-oriented talents to yet another CDS production. Once again, he is impressed by the team effort. "The Cayman Drama Society is a very healthy organization," he says, "There are a lot of talented people involved."
