'Successful' first pre-Olympic terrorism exercises

Athens 2004 Olympic Organising Committee Petros Synadinos (R) with the chairwoman of the Olympics Organising Committee Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalaki in Athens.

ATHENS, (AFP) - Greek authorities said on Sunday they were satisfied with the performance of the army and the emergency services in the first anti-terrorist exercises ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games.

The exercises involved a simulated plane hijack at Athens airport and a bomb threat at one of the floating hotels in the port of Piraeus which will accommodate visitors to the Olympics.

Around 1,800 people took part in the exercises which were the result of a year's cooperation between Greek police and British anti-terrorist experts from Scotland Yard.

The organisers of the Athens Games have earmarked 644 million euros (dollars) to finance a huge security operation for the event.

Assistant referee felled as Kabylie complete CAF Cup hat-trick

YAOUNDE, (AFP) - A Tunisian assistant referee was struck by a missile hurled from the crowd as Algerian club JS Kabylie lifted the CAF Cup a record third consecutive time lst Sunday.

The incident occurred after five minutes of the second leg of the final won 1-0 by Tonnerre Yaounde of Cameroon, who faced a virtual impossible mission having lost 4-0 in Algiers two weeks ago.

Taoufik Oueslati was felled when an unidentified object struck him on the back of the head as Tonnerre were preparing to take a corner at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium in the Cameroon capital.
