72 percent of women in Delhi sexually harassed: survey
NEW DELHI, (AFP) - More than 70 percent of women in the Indian capital New Delhi say they have been sexually harassed and 18 percent say it happens every day, according to a newspaper survey last Sunday.
The survey of 311 women by the Hindustan Times newspaper also found that 43 percent wanted rapists to be castrated and 71 percent wanted the death penalty.
Seventy-two percent said they had been sexually harassed, while 16 percent said they had been molested.
The survey follows a roadside rape of a 24-year-old medical student earlier this month which shocked the city.
The women was dragged off a busy street, less than a kilometre (mile) away from police headquarters, in broad daylight. Police have arrested four people in connection with the incident.
The case led to MPs in the upper house of parliament to call for the death sentence for rapists.
More than half of the women in the survey said they felt unsafe while commuting, while 38 percent felt insecure in public places.
Nearly 70 percent said not enough was being done by the police in Delhi, while a similar number said stricter laws were needed.
