Prize winning play "Bachelor Boy" premieres at the Harquail Theatre next month

The second of two prize-winning plays from the recent National Playwriting Competition is set to have its premiere at the Harquail Theatre.

Stephen Pickering's comedy Bachelor Boy will be performed Fridays through Sundays, December 6th to 15th.

The production is the twelfth partnership in as many years between producers, Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF), and sponsors Caribbean Utilities Company Ltd. (CUC), who have funded the presentation of the winning play every year since the inception of the competition.

Described by adjudicators as containing a "well crafted story line," Bachelor Boy combines brisk dialogue, some shifty, but lovable characters and clever plot twists into a humourous melange tracking the exploits of a bachelor, Alan, his current fiancée, his ex-fiancée, his parents and her father, who all have an opinion as to who Alan should marry.

He finally comes to a decision, despite the shenanigans of his "well meaning" relatives, but what remains to be seen is whether his bride to be will still be willing by the time he makes up his mind.

The multi-national cast includes Caymanians Morgan DaCosta and Sharon Solomon as Alan and his former fiancée, Sarah; Canadian Elaine Byrtus as Jane the current girlfriend, and veterans Tony Rowlands, Peter Riley and Valerie Cottier, all long-time Cayman residents, originally from Britain.

The play is the second by Stephen Pickering to reach the Harquail stage, his first, The Weakend, having been produced in 1995.

Dr. Pickering has said his participation in the playwriting competition is an outlet for his creative inclinations although, as a busy physician, he has not been able to take part as often as he would have liked.

Tickets for Bachelor Boy can be reserved by contacting the Cultural Foundation at the Harquail Theatre (949-5477), where information is also available about other outlets. Adults pay $15, tickets for children under twelve, are $8.
