Children's Service Marks Start of Advent

A number of local youth organizations will mark the start of the Advent season this Sunday, 1 December when they come together for the third annual Christingle service hosted by St. George's Anglican Church.

The Christingle celebration is a traditional feature of Advent around the world, and Cayman's participants will join over a million children across Europe, the UK, the Caribbean and elsewhere in this memorable event. Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows, members of the Scouts Association, St. George's pre-school and other groups are scheduled to participate.

The service helps children focus on Christ as the 'light of the world' through prayer, songs, music, readings and message. The event takes its name from the christingle: an orange bearing a candle, red ribbon and a beautiful array of fruit and sweets. This is given to each child as a tangible symbol of Christ's light shining in the darkness, of his salvation, and of the blessings he gives to the world.

A highlight of the event is when all the candles are lit and the children march around the church singing.

The celebration is also an opportunity for the children to share in the spirit of giving as they are invited to bring an offering of canned goods and new linen. These will be passed on to the Cayman Crisis Centre, which is soon to be opened as a shelter for victims of domestic abuse and their children. In the past, educational supplies and toys have been collected at the Christingle services and sent to Montserrat and Belize, which were affected by natural disasters.

This year's service will be held at 4pm at St. George's Church, off Eastern Avenue.
