The United World Colleges (Cayman Islands) National Foundation is pleased to announce that it has received a significant donation of US$40,000 from QSPV Limited to assist with Cayman Islands UWC scholarships.

This much-needed injection of funds will assist the foundation in facilitating the ongoing provision of scholarships for young Caymanians attending United World Colleges (UWC) in Hong Kong, New Mexico, British Columbia, Canada, and India. There are presently six scholarship students undertaking the colleges' two-year international baccalaureate programme.

The full scholarships are awarded annually to well-rounded students with outstanding academic backgrounds, who are also leaders or active participants in social and/or artistic extracurricular activities. The programme consists of advanced preparation for university in any country. At United World Colleges, emphasis is always given to individual growth, as well as international and cultural understanding.

One of the underlying philosophies of the United World Colleges is that there can be peace through international understanding! The movement believes that fundamentally, people are very similar; however, biases develop over time because of misunderstanding and miscommunication, often contributing to conflicts. Examining how to overcome these conflicts through international exchange, whilst pursuing a rigorous academic and extracurricular programme, are fundamental parts of the United World Colleges experience.

Since 1984, approximately 39 young Caymanians have participated in the two-year programme prior to attending university. Many of these youth have now returned home and are making substantial contributions towards the growth and development of the Cayman Islands. CIUWC Chairman Patrick Schmid emphasises that corporate funding is essential to the ongoing success of this unique and important scholarship programme.

"These scholarships represent important educational opportunities for the young people of the Cayman Islands," says Mr. Schmid. "However, with each two-year scholarship now costing US$45,000, raising the necessary funds continues to be a huge challenge for us." The six Caymanian students presently on scholarship represent a fundraising effort of more than US$275,000.

The United World Colleges (Cayman Islands) National Foundation encourages corporate citizens to follow the kindness and generous citizenry demonstrated by QSPV Limited in considering this scholarship programme as the recipient of their annual donations for educational funding.
