Candidates in Breach of ElectionSpending by not including Nomination Day Deposit

Mr. Kearney Gomez
Supervisor of Elections

Some candidates are in violationof the Elections Law that limits them to spending no more than$10,000 on their elections campaign from the designated periodpreceeding and following elections.
This is according to a memorandum sent by Supervisor of Elections,Mr. Kearney Gomez, to all parties contesting the upcoming electionson the advice of the office of Solicitor General, Mr. Sam Bulgin.

The text of the memorandum reads: "We have sought legal counselregarding the above issue [elections deposit] and have been directedto advise that the $1,000 paid on Nominations Day [by candidates]is to be considered an Elections expense."

The difficulty some candidates now face is that many of them havealready committed their budget, and have stretched their purchasingpower by pre-paying for media and other collateral costs.

When this fact was pointed out to an Elections Office official, his response was "the candidates are in breach" if theyhave already spent $10,000.00 plus the $1,000.00 paid to the government.

Added to this is the likelihood that some of the candidates maylose their deposits in some of the districts because of the highnumber of declared candidates.

Several candidates have been in touch with Cayman Net News expressingdismay at this recent development.

CNN's Election Poll Delayed

Technical hitches in connectionwith the Cayman Net News/ICCI poll which was scheduled to takeplace last Monday night, has resulted in the postponement of thecontinuation of the survey until later this week.
Results are nearly completed for some of the smaller electoraldistricts.
Cable & Wireless reached an arrangement with Cayman Net Newsto supply it with a minimum of 10 per cent of their listed subscibers'numbers, without names and addresses.
It is anticipated that the results of this much-expected pollwill be published next week.
