Shervin Wood Returns with 'Deals'

Shervin Wood

One of Cayman's brightestentrepreneurs, Sherwin Wood, the former owner of Woods Esso Stationon and the Builders Club Tru-Valu from 1983 - 1995, has returnedto Grand Cayman after a hiatus of five years.

During his break, he attended Nova Southeastern University inFt Lauderdale Florida. He will complete his studies at the endof October and return to start a new Home Improvement type storenamed 'Deals'.

The store will be located in the NWF Building - which presentlyhouses the Tru-Valu store near to the airport oentrance on CreweRoad.

"I believe that today's consumer deserves to buy productsthat are of the best quality, that are of the best price, andthat are provided with the most excellent service available,"says Shervin, "and this is what I am going to provide atDeals. The name 'Deals' exemplifies what Cayman consumers canexpect."

"This operation is much smaller than our competitors,"he continues "and this gives us a competitive advantage inthat we will have less overhead costs and will be able to operatemore efficiently. We will be constantly monitoring wholesale pricesfrom different suppliers in order to get the lowest prices andwe will pass the low prices onto our customers."

Over the next few months he will be renovating the store's facilitieswithout
enlarging the premises. By staying small, he believes that thesavings realised can be passed on to the consumer.

"I believe that consumers realize that the larger storeshave to charge higher prices in order to pay for their largerstores. So for the foreseeable future we're staying small,"he confirms.

"Another expense we're going to avoid is the cost of havinga field salesman. I notice that a lot of US based salesmen goaround from construction job to construction job in Cayman, sellingbuilding materials. This is somewhat unfair to local businesseswho have invested in store facilities here, and also unfair toconsumers because they often buy from these salesmen without comparingprices. This will no longer be the case, because the consumercan come to us and we will be able to give them the same price- in some cases less - than the US people can offer."

Mr. Woods says that he is very excited about this new venture:"If there is one significant thing that I can say to Caymanconsumers it is this: You deserve the best quality products, atthe best prices, and with the best service and this is what 'Deals'is going to give you."
