Popularityof Swimming Attracts Crowds to Lions Centre Pool

The popularity of competitive swimming in the Cayman Islands canbe attested to by the crowd usually found at the public swimmingpool at the Lions Centre.
Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association vice-president LoriPowell explained that overcrowding is what has motivated the associationto launch a drive to build another pool double the size of thecurrent one of 25 metres.
She said that in summer there are long lines of parents seekingregistration of their children and some training sessions forthis pool with well over 1000 swimmers begin as early as 5am.
"It is just bursting at its seams. I think a lot of it hasto do with the achievement of swimmers in the programmes. Everybodywants more pool time but there is not enough," she said.
In its fund-raising effort CIASA is holding a silent auction ofitems that include international swimmers memorabilia to be followedby a dinner with the keynote speaker being five-time Olympic medallistBrian Godell Saturday, 20 October, at the Hyatt Pavilion.
