Residents Invitedto Shape Rights Framework

Cayman Islands residents are invited tohelp shape the local human rights framework by participating inconsultations from 31 October to 4 November.

The outcome of this dialogue will be incorporated into a humanrights workshop, specific to Cayman, which is scheduled for January2002.

The consultations and subsequent workshop are co-ordinated andsupported by the Governor's Office and the Ministry of CommunityDevelopment, Women Affairs, Youth and Sports. Funding for theinitiatives comes from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)and its Department for International Development (DFID), saidthe Governor's Staff Officer Kevin Mowbray.

"This workshop is for the people of the Cayman Islands todetermine their own future regarding human rights," he explained."For example, some persons may want to air their viewpointson the conventions to which the UK ascribes and that have in turnbeen extended to us. Others may wish to explore aspects of otherconventions that have not been extended up to now, but that theywould like to see applied here in the future, such as the UnitedNations Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women(CEDAW).

"Ultimately, the thrust is for the workshop to be led bythe people," he said, "and any group that would liketo help participate in the consultation process is welcome."
