Minister ofCommunity Development Visits Sunrise Centre

 


The Hon. Edna Moyle demonstratedher continuing concern for the welfare of students of the SunriseAdult Training Centre, as well as her commitment to improvingthe conditions for users during a visit there last week.

Located in West Bay, the facility serves some 25 special needsyoung adults from districts around Grand Cayman.

Accompanied by her Permanent Secretary Carson Ebanks and SeniorAssistant Secretary Dorrine Whittaker, Mrs. Moyle was led on atour by the Centre's manager Roberta Gordon, staff members andparents.

The group reviewed the well-utilised but crowded learning andcraft rooms, which have allowed the students to progress overthe years from dependant and usually house-bound children, toproductive and generally independently-functioning adults.

In addition to the basics of education, skills such as groomingand housekeeping are taught Most of the students work on a part-timebasis at hotels and other local businesses.

However, transport was mentioned as a concern, as students travelfrom as far as East End. Student Darley Fellner, who is confinedto a wheelchair, told the minister of the need for a bus witha wheelchair ramp.

Following a social gathering with the young men and women of Sunrise,the visiting officials departed Mrs. Moyle, who promised to returnand to "find a bigger and better place" for them.
