Organisersof the Vivian Rankine Memorial Dart Tournament, Mr. Sean Bodden(left) and Detective Sergeant Martin Bodden Jr., accept a Cable& Wireless cheque of $1,000 from Corporate CommunicationsExecutive Marilyn Whittaker.
Cable & Wireless continues to give backto the community with a donation of $1,000 to The Vivian RankineMemorial Dart Tournament.
The first tournament was held three yearsago. At the time of his passing, Mr. Rankine had been a long-servingpolice office of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and amember of the Police Dart team. He was greatly missed by his team-mateswho felt that establishing an annual tournament was one way theycould keep him close and keep his memory alive, states DetectiveSergeant in charge of West Bay CID, Martin Bodden Jr.
From its inception it was decided that allproceeds from the tournament would be placed in a college accountfor Vivian's son George Michael Rankine, Mr. Bodden added. A portionof the funds raised through sponsorship is used to cover tournamentexpenses such as the cost of trophies, t-shirts and advertisements.
Remaining sponsorship funds together withmonies collected from the tournament registrations and sale oft-shirts are deposited into a Student Saver account designatedfor George Rankine at Royal Bank of Canada.
Mr. Bodden adds that Mr. Rankine was a loverof many other sports including pool. Therefore, the committeeis looking at the possibility of a pool tournament as part ofthe existing activities held over the weekend, which marks TheVivian Rankine Memorial Dart Tournament. "In this way wecan gain additional support through a greater cross-section ofpeople who knew him," said Mr. Bodden. "During the pastthree years the support for the tournament has been overwhelming. The turnout has been inspiring and we continue to appeal to thepublic and players alike to continue their support of this worthycause.
"We are hoping this year's tournamentwill be as exciting as last year's. Most dart players are nowat the top of their game, many having recently competed in theCaribbean Dart Championships, which were held here in late Julythrough early August, so there should be some exciting showdowns.
"We also appeal to non-dart-playersto come out and watch some top-class darts or come and competewith us. We are always happy to welcome new players into the sports,"Mr. Bodden said.
The tournament, scheduled for Saturday andSunday 19 and 20 October, will host first, second and third playwinners of Division A and B for the gold and silver awards, respectively. The action begins at 1:30 each day at the Corner Pocket, AlisstaTower, North Sound Road.
