Miss Teen Cayman Awarded Scholarship

Miss Teen Cayman 2000, Schwannah McCarthyreceived a $7500. scholarship at a special presentation on Tuesday,August 29. The Minister of Education, Hon. Truman Bodden was onhand to make the presentation and to personally congratulate MissMcCarthy on recently being crowned as the 22nd Miss Teen CaymanIslands.
When asked at the presentation ceremony about her future collegeplans, Miss McCarthy replied she has not made any final decision,but that she knows it will be somewhere "very hot".Several universities from Florida and Texas have already beenin touch with the 16-year-old John Gray student, and at this timeshe is leaning toward studying in Texas. She went on to say thatwhatever school she chooses must maintain high academic standards,and must be able to accommodate her athletic interests as well.
"I'm interested in international law and international masscommunication," she said, "but I haven't decided whichto focus on completely."
As for her more immediate plans, Miss McCarthy said she intendsto study for a year at the Cayman Islands Community College aftershe graduates from John Gray High School and before she beginsher university education abroad. She is still undecided, however,on future pageant aspirations.
Miss Teen Committee member, Ms. Rosandi Weatherford said thatMiss McCarthy might be a contender for the title of Miss TeenCaribbean at the regional pageant in Trinidad and Tobago thisNovember, but no decision has been finalized about the contest.
Schwannah may also entertain future aspirations about competingfor the title of Miss Cayman at some point, but that remains tobe determined as well. She says she simply wants to inspire youngpeople in the most effective forum possible and that her futuredecisions will be guided by whatever the Lord wants her to do.
The new Miss Teen Cayman is expected to sign the contract forher one-year reign on Wednesday, August 30, 2000.
