Mrs. Florence McGrath

The millennium graduation ceremony for studentsof the Law School was quite special for Caymanian Mrs. FlorenceMcGrath, who recently expressed "a deep sense of accomplishmentin numbering amongst the law graduates at the July 3lst when shereceived the Legal Studies Diploma."

She felt the event was especially memorable in that it was gracedby the presence of the visiting dignitary, Baroness Scotland, who could "certainly be said to serve as an inspiring rolemodel for other working mothers," avers Mrs. McGrath.

She went on to explain that the Diploma represents successfulcompletion of six of the twelve subjects constituting the LLB,which is granted by the University of Liverpool through the CaymanIslands Law School, and the marks are awarded on a totally impartialbasis, as all exams and coursework are assessed externally inEngland.

"Most people would agree that a working mother of two, holdingdown a demanding position as a Senior Trust Officer in the TrustDepartment of the Bank of Butterfield International (Cayman) Limited, would not seem a likely candidate for success in a rigorous academiccourse" she comments. However, despite these potential hurdles, after four years her studies were completed with grades equivalentto a 2.2. Honours pass.

Mrs. McGrath attributes her good academic results to the positiveproof of God at work in her life, as she feels this latest personalaccomplishment would not have been possible without his help.

She states that she is fortunate to have had the love and emotionalsupport of her husband, Donal, a director in the local firm ofCGMJ Ltd., along with her two children, Daniel and Clare-Louise.She is also grateful to her employers who provided financing forthe course, and the many friends who cheered her along the way.

As a working mother, she hopes others will be encouraged to takeadvantage of the wonderful opportunity for career advancement, offered by the Cayman Islands Law School, saying: "It definitelyis not easy, but like the little red engine, you just have tothink you can, think you can!"
After taking a break, Mrs. McGrath plans to continue pursing herlaw studies at the Cayman Islands Law School.
