Government NegotiatingTeam's Trip to the UK Canceled
Cayman Net News has learned that the team whichhas traveled extensively in the past months, in connection withthe OECD, Financial Action Task Force (FATF), G7, and other mattersin connection with Cayman's position on the world's financialstage, have had to postpone their to the UK trip, which was plannedfor Sunday, 10 September.
It is known that the members of the delegationconsisting of the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Truman Bodden,Financial Secretary Mr. George McCarthy, Attorney General Mr.David Ballantyne, Hon. Thomas Jefferson and MLA Linford Pierson,were scheduled to meet in London with the UK Goverment's Foreignand Commonwealth Office (FCO) and principals of KPMG, in connectionthe report that accounting firm has put together regarding thefinancial operations of the five British Overseas Territoriestrading as tax havens.
The current session of the Legislative Assembly- which is the final one for this current Government, was suspendeduntil Thursday of this week (14 September) to enable the fivemembers of the negotiating team, who are all Members of the Houseto travel to England.
With a full agenda of several Motions andParliamentary Questions yet to be addressed, Legislators are hardpressed to complete their business before House is prorogued onTuesday, 26 September. The following day, is Nomination Day forcandidates to formally register their intention to run.
With this recent development, it is notknown at this time whether or not the Legislature will re-conveneearlier, or what are the reasons for the aborted trip to London.In this regard, there will most likely be a communication comingfrom Government to inform the public, as to the reasons for thecancellation.
