George Hicks High Schoolstudents in their new canteen

Monday, September 4th saw the culminationof three years of planning come to fruition as the Home SchoolAssociation of the George Hicks High School (GHHS), took overmanagement of the spanking new $700,000 canteen, which was fundedby Government. It was built by Hill Construction and fitted outby Hews.

A reception was held on Thursday, 31 August to celebrate the opening.
Principal Adora Bodden-Groome pointed out that the new canteenwsa the culmination of work done by the three PTA/HSAs. Ministerof Education, the Hon. Truman Bodden, congratulated the associations, saying they "have done a tremendous job in overseeing andfacilitating the development and operation of the canteen."

Current HSA/PTA president acknowledged the work of Mr. ShirleyAnn Tibbetts, saying she envisioned the facility three years agoand promoted the idea.

All profit from the canteen's operation will now be returned tothe school through the Home School Association executive for thebenefit of the whole school community.
Although there have been some teething problems with new staff, new equipment and getting students into a new canteen routine, the venture has got off to a great start.

All students are now obliged to eat in the main Hall in air-conditionedcomfort. Trays, plates and proper utensils have been welcomedby the students as has the very appetising four week rotatingmenu prepared by Canteen Supervisor Arnold Hanni, a chef of some30 years experience.

Students are assured of a choice of healthy nourishing meals eachday at lunchtime as well as the opportunity to have a cooked breakfastin the morning and a wide variety of hot and cold snack itemsat breaktime.

In the true spirit of George Hicks the venture has the supportof the staff and parents, some of whom have dropped by in thepast few days to lunch with their children.
"GHHS is well known for its open door policy", saidMrs. Groome-Bodden, "and this new facility is just one morereason why parents might just want to drop by."
