Looky Ya! Celebrates TraditionalArts and Crafts


On Thursday,September 26th, the Cayman Islands National Museum held a celebrationof traditional arts and crafts called Looky Ya! Mrs. Merdene Ebanks(right), whose thatch bags and hats are seen here, has known thecraft of thatching since she was a little girl. "I must havebeen 10 years old when I learned it," she says. "Mymother, my grandmother and all my aunts knew how to do it."Ms. Nellie Ebanks (left) also learned the craft from her motherand cousins "many years ago." Other items, such as canvasbags and wraps made locally by Ms. Sylvia Ebanks, were also ondisplay and on sale. Visitors were even given a taste a localcuisine compliments of Ms. Rosemay Ebanks.
