Port Proceeds

Despite a delay due to a design revision, the Royal Watler Terminal Cruise Tendering Facility in George Town is back on track and will still be completed in time for the peak 2004-2005 cruise ship season, according to Burns Conolly of the project managers Burns Conolly Group.  "Design plans for the building are going back to the Planning Department within the next two weeks," said Mr Conolly in a telephone interview last Friday, "and the project is anticipated to be complete by October."... read more...


Light pole problem addressed

In an attempt to solve the problem of the danger poised by the concrete blocks along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, Public Works has agreed to install ramps before each block to lessen the potential damage caused if a motorist runs into one.  Collisions with fixed roadside objects account for one quarter of all fatal accidents and Cayman Islands Road Safety Council (CIRSC) aired their concerns about the concrete bases for the light poles... read more...


Lord Black unable to account for Cayman Free Press dividends

A committee investigating alleged financial wrongdoing by newspaper baron Conrad Black has been unable to account for dividend payments from Cayman Free Press to a Toronto-based holding company controlled by Black, according to a recent report by the New York Post.  Hollinger Inc, the Toronto-based holding company controlled by Black, has owned a 40 percent stake in Cayman Free Press, which publishes The Caymanian Compass, since 1988, and the company's share of the dividends amounts to roughly $100,000 a year, according to sources...  read more...


Liquor Board Grateful To Emergency Crew

During a meeting by the Cayman Island Liquor Licensing Board, held last week, the Chairman of the Board thanked emergency crews for rescuing his friend and colleague from a serious early-morning car accident on Wednesday, 31 December.  "On behalf of the board," began Chairman Mitchell Welds, "I would like to publicly thank the emergency service that participated in the rescue of Mr William Connolly. Financial institutions scramble to avoid Parmalat fallout

Merrill Lynch warned investors about potential trouble at Parmalat almost a year before the Italian food giant's stock price collapsed, plunging it into bankruptcy in a multi-billion-dollar accounting scandal.  The investment- banking firm published a blistering report in December 2002 warning investors to steer clear of Parmalat's stock. In the 18-page report, Merrill analyst Joanna Speed gave the shares a "sell" rating and cast doubt on Parmalat's financial strategy... read more...
