Banking analyst to run for George Town district seat

Jonathan Piercy

Jonathan Piercy believes that Cayman is beset by a handful of problems rooted in a systemic failure of respect for people and accountability of government.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate for George Town said, “I feel that respect has been a declining commodity in Cayman. Respect for our environment, respect for our economy, respect for our communities, and respect for our government”.

“We need to return that sense of pride to our islands that I remember as a youth. We need to hold our government accountable to its people, because important decisions about the future of our country will not resolve themselves. They require the commitment of individuals who care about the greater good.”

Mr Piercy voiced concern for an education system that is failing a new generation of Caymanians and profound economic mismanagement that, he said, threatens the future of the islands.

“This country has been led down the wrong path over the last four years,” he said. “There has been a lack of leadership on important governance issues within our police force, our local university college, and the complete lack of proper bookkeeping and accountability with the government finances. This has to end. And, bringing responsible government back to Cayman is what has motivated me to run for office.”

Official mismanagement had severely damaged the local economy, Mr Piercy said, “but it is still possible to repair that damage and get Cayman back on track.” He said it would require a return to fiscal discipline, a renewed commitment to the country’s two main industries, finance and tourism, and an education system that prepares youth for work in every related sector.

Mr Piercy attended John Gray High School and graduated from the International College of the Cayman Islands with an associate degree in banking. In 2002, he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in business from Florida A&M, where he focused on international finance, investment strategy and financial management. He is a former bank analyst at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority and currently a Senior Risk Analyst at Butterfield Bank,

“If elected, I pledge to do everything in my power to bring back responsible government and to improve the quality of life for our people,” Mr Piercy said. “Serious issues will no longer be ignored. The UDP will put the Cayman Islands back on the path to prosperity and restore our national pride.”

Will he have to resign from the bank?

Susan Smith:
It's a shame this young man wouldn't run Independent; the fact that he has joined the UDP doesn't give me much hope for this country. Shame; he would have had my vote.
