Stuarts pays tribute to founder and Cayman business icon

Published on Friday, October 16, 2009 Email To Friend    Print Version

William Walker

The late William Walker was a pioneer and founding father of Cayman’s offshore financial services industry who started one of the first law firms to specialise in offshore finance at a time when the Cayman Islands was home to only one bank, had no telephones and a landing strip that could only manage turbo props. So it is only fitting that his legacy be honoured by Stuarts, a leading Caymanian law firm he helped establish.

The William Walker Memorial Presentation (WWMP) will debut at the next International Funds Conference to be hosted in Cayman on 14 January at the Ritz-Carlton. Stuarts plans to make this presentation a regular feature throughout the year by bringing eminent speakers to the islands with one or more presentations being given overseas in New York and London.

According to Anthony Akiwumi, Head of Litigation at Stuarts, “the presentation is planned to be an annual event. By honouring the remarkable career of William Walker we hope to renew a sense of pride in the islands and inspire a new generation of leaders to carry the Cayman banner to even greater heights.”

The upcoming conference will focus on the challenges surrounding Global Transparency.

Stuarts Managing Director Andrew Hersant, says “The International Funds Conference, sponsored by Stuarts, has built a strong name for itself within the industry because we ensure that attendees are provided with first-rate information from high profile speakers. We believe the WWMP will be a vital part of continuing that goal.”

This year’s featured speaker for the William Walker Memorial Presentation is Andrew Bacevich, Professor of International Relations and History at Boston University. Dr. Bacevich has been a fellow of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He will be speaking on the subject of US imperialism and its effect on international affairs.

David Walker, CEO of Caledonian Bank and son of the late William Walker, says “On behalf of the Walker family I would like to thank Stuarts for creating this programme to honour my father. He was never one to seek the spotlight yet if this type of event can educate and inspire Caymanians I am certain he would approve.”

Stuarts is a client-oriented legal practice offering a full range of corporate and commercial legal advice. They have a proven track-record in advising leading international law firms, investment managers, investment companies and high-net-worth individuals.
