The race gets off to a clean start
Over 700 walkers and runners turned out for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens (LCTG) Annual Brenda Tibbetts-Lund 5K Memorial Walk/Run. which was held at West Bay Public Beach on Saturday, 10 October.
Now a firm fixture on the events calendar, the memorial walk/run is in its twelfth year. Staged in memory of Brenda Tibbetts Lund who lost her battle with breast cancer, the event seeks to raise funds to fight against breast cancer while promoting the importance of early detection as the best protection in this fight.
The event also celebrates the survivors of breast cancer. A special ‘survivors’ tent was erected on the beach, and it was inspiring to see the interaction between the survivors, family members and participants in the walk/run.
Awards for the walk/run were given for first, second and third place in different age sections. Spot prizes were also given which included airline tickets courtesy of Cayman Airways and Blackberry Smart Phones courtesy of LIME and Digicel.
Another highlight of the event was the breast cancer survivors’ gate prize for an all-expense paid cruise on Carnival Freedom. Breast Cancer survivor Edith Ebanks and Amy Hunt were the lucky winners for the Breast Cancer Survivors’ cruise scheduled to sail from Fort Lauderdale in May 2010.
“The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens is extremely grateful to the public for its continued support of this event,” said Lion Ann Hunte, Chairperson of the BCA Committee.
Mrs Hunte also expressed her appreciation to the many sponsors. She noted that Kim Lund and ReMax Cayman Islands, the major sponsors, have been involved with the event from its inception and continue to demonstrate commitment to its successful conclusion every year. She also thanked Mr. Whittaker of Calico Jack who makes his premises available to the club each year to host the event.
The run/walk is just one of a series of events being held to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. On Saturday, 31 October at 8:00 am sharp, a Breakfast for Breast Cancer Survivors will be held at Hemingways for all breast cancer survivors. The Baptist Health International co-sponsored event will feature guest speakers Chris Hubbard, spiritual psychologist, Life Coach and 14-year breast cancer survivor, Cayman’s own Dr Joseph Ostroski and Medical Director of the new Breast Care Centre in South Miami, Dr Robert DerHagoppian. Breast cancer survivors will be have another opportunity to win a gate prize for the Breast Cancer Survivors’ cruise aboard the Carnival Freedom.
