The 3rd Annual Breeze Fusion 3k Run/Walk will be held this Saturday 7 November starting opposite the entrance of John Gray High School.
Radio Cayman staff said that the excitement is increasing in anticipation of the most successful staging to date. Despite the current economic challenges, the event has received tremendous support, albeit from a smaller number of sponsors and donors. Their generosity more than compensates. Sponsors are Roma United FC, Funky Tangs, Reflections, ARCP, Progressive Distributors, Sport N Zone, Massive Equipment & Party Rental and Lee’s Office Products. HSBC Cayman supports the event through the donation of T-shirts and entry of a large team from their company in the event.
This year’s chosen beneficiaries of this charitable event—the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO and the Lion’s Club of Tropical Gardens “Reading is Cool Programme”—are pleased to be receiving proceeds from the event.
The NCVO—a recipient since inception of the event—has partnered over the years with Radio Cayman for their annual Radio/Telethon. The Radio/Telethon began as a Radiothon on Radio Cayman and evolved into the Telethon, which is usually held on the evening of the same day the Run/Walk takes place. Ms. Janice Wilson, CEO of the NCVO continues to express her appreciation. “We are very grateful to Radio Cayman & Breeze FM for supporting the NCVO through this annual event. Funds raised by the Run/Walk go directly into our programmes, which help local children in need.” And Chairperson of the LCTG’s Early Childhood & Youth Committee, Jondo Obie, says, “It is very exciting to get support for the “Reading is Cool Programme” which started some four years ago. The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens is taking a different approach to learning. Although small, it is more than a reading programme—it is a workshop through which we nurture and encourage healthy eating habits. A child who is eating well, we feel functions well. We incorporate arts and craft so they can be creative, there’s play-time and the workshop ends with a library visit. As the programme has developed, our strategy has changed to have the same group of children at the workshop each time to ensure continuity. This also allows for a more “personal touch”, developing a relationship which can have long term benefits for both the Club and the children. From similar socio-economic backgrounds, but different districts, they interact with each other in a way that doesn’t always happen. Like Radio Cayman and Breeze FM, we are happy to provide support for the youth in our community who may not otherwise enjoy certain opportunities.”
Categories cover a wide age and ability range, from under 12 to over 60 and include a “pram-pushers” category. Registration is again a nominal $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. Pre-registration is happening every day at caymanactive.com/breeze. Registration will also take place on the morning of the event starting at 6:45am for a 7:30 start. The first 140 participants will receive an event T-shirt. In addition, participant medals and a gift will be given to the first 75 runners/50 walkers as well as 1st, 2nd, 3rd place finishers in each category. Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female winners. There will also be random prizes.
Last year, organizers and competitors braved the weather, with some 50 participants turning out. The organizers are expecting an even larger field of participants and reassures interested persons that the event will go on “rain or shine”.
