World's Largest Cruise Ship Sets Sail with Tortuga Rum Cakes

Published on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Email To Friend    Print Version

Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, begins sailing the Caribbean with its gift shops carrying Tortuga Rum Cakes. The 225,000-ton ship is nearly 50% larger than the largest cruise vessels now afloat and can hold nearly 6,300 passengers and a crew of over 2,000. Over a quarter-million people are expected to sail on the ship in the coming year.

The ship will not be visiting the Cayman Islands, where tenders are used to bring cruise passengers ashore. Yet Oasis passengers still will be able to enjoy the Cayman’s # 1 export, Tortuga Caribbean rum cakes, sold in its gift shop and on more than 100 other cruise ships. There also is a Tortuga rum cake franchise bakery in Nassau, Bahamas, which is an Oasis of the Seas port of call.

“Until Cayman has a cruise berthing facility, mega ships like the Oasis will pass us by,” says Monique Hamaty-Simmonds, assistant managing director of the Tortuga Rum Company, founded by her father 25 years ago. “Fortunately, we still will be introducing hundreds of thousands of tourists to our authentic taste of the Cayman Islands.”

Tortuga rum cakes are made with the finest ingredients from a four generation old family secret recipe. Each cake is hand glazed with a special oak barrel aged Tortuga gold rum, then heat sealed and vacuum packed to lock in its delicious freshness. They are available in three sizes – 4oz, 16oz and 33oz, and eight tropical flavors – original golden with walnuts, coconut, chocolate, banana, key lime, Blue Mountain coffee, pineapple and cinnamon raisin.
