Two arrested in bank heist

Police arrested two men late Friday in connection with the robbery last Thursday at the Cayman National Bank (CNB) Savannah branch.

“On Friday afternoon 5 February, a motor car suspected of being involved in the incident was recovered from the Spotts Newlands area,” said a spokesperson for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS). “Later that night two Caymanian men, aged 21 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of robbery. They are currently detained in police custody pending further enquiries.”

According to police, shortly after 12.30 pm on Thursday, 4 February, two men entered the CNB, Countryside Shopping Centre, in Savannah. Both men were wearing masks and one was armed with what appeared to be a handgun.

The RCIPS reported that one of the men discharged the firearm into the air, and then ran off with a sum of cash. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Following the robbery, an extensive investigation was launched by the RCIPS that included officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), scenes of crime unit, joint intelligence unit, the uniform support group and traffic management in the coordinated operation.

Over the past few days several houses were searched by the RCIPS and a number of people were interviewed in relation to the enquiry. The RCIPS spokesperson said that CCTV footage obtained from the bank and from businesses in the Countryside Shopping Centre is instrumental to the investigation.

This is the second time in recent years that CNB has been robbed.

A similar incident occurred on March 2006 when the Centennial Towers branch in West Bay was robbed.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery who has not already been interviewed by police is asked to contact Bodden Town CID on 947-2220 or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).
