Governor tours George Town Hospital

Published on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 Email To Friend    Print Version

Governor Duncan Taylor did not quite get out the door of the George Town Hospital after his recent tour of the facility before getting invited to receive an H1N1 immunization. He rolled up his sleeve for the shot without hesitation, as did his wife, Marie-Beatrice Taylor, who had accompanied her husband, delighting the hospital’s staff.

In the hour or so that the Governor spent on his official visit, he said he had been “very impressed” with both the facilities available and the staff as well. He likened the George Town Hospital to those he had toured in the UK, rather than other eastern Caribbean hospitals he had visited. He praised the hospital staff for the “calm way” in which the hospital appeared to be functioning.

The tour was part of the couple’s effort to familiarise themselves with a wide variety of aspects of the Cayman Islands. They were introduced to staff by Ms Lizzette Yearwood, the Health Services Authority’s chief executive officer, and spent time with doctors, nurses and some patients at a variety of wards, including public health, mental health, maternity, the forensic laboratory, physiotherapy, ambulatory care, accident and emergency, the dialysis unit, the surgical wards and the pediatric unit.

Though this visit was the Governor’s first “official” engagement at the George Town Hospital, this was not the first time he had been there, having had treatment almost as soon as he arrived on Cayman for a herniated disc in his neck that required what he termed “cutting edge” laser treatment.

“My personal experience of the hospital was very good,” he said, and when questioned about his thoughts on the hospital’s operation, he replied: “I met quite a few patients and they were all smiling, so that is always a good sign!”
