Police in Cayman Brac are calling on all motorists to take extra care when on the roads on Monday, 26 January while the Lions Club road relay race takes place.

Starting on Kirkconnell Street outside the District Administration Building at 6:30 am, the race will follow a route down onto Stake Bay Front Road, Ryans Drive, Denis Foster Road and then back up to Kirkconnell Street – a route known locally as the ‘Stake Bay loop’ - and is expected to finish at around 11:00 am.

Kirkconnell Street will be closed for the duration of the race, allowing the approximate 120 persons taking part to do so safely. All drivers are asked to take extra care on the roads and race participants are asked to be aware of their actions and surroundings.

RCIPS has said that uniformed officers will be stationed at various points of the race, and cones and warning signs will be placed in strategic places.

Additionally, police in Cayman Brac are urging members of the public to lock their vehicles and not leave valuable items on display after some electrical equipment was stolen from an insecure car overnight on 16 January.

“Thankfully this type of offence is rare in Cayman Brac,” said Sergeant Matthew Dawson. “However, we must not be complacent and all vehicle owners should take sensible precautions to protect their property and ensure items such as cameras, power tools and handbags are not left on display. This is particularly important at the moment as there are many temporary workers assisting with post-Paloma clean-up and an opportunist thief could be very tempted by an unlocked car.”

The RCIPS is issuing the following tips and advice relating to vehicles and bikes:

Cars

• Lock the doors and close the windows when you leave the vehicle for any length of time.
• Don’t leave anything on display – even a pair of sunglasses can seem an appealing target for a thief.
• A steering lock can help secure older vehicles.
• Make a note of the vehicle’s chassis number.
• Keep your car keys in a safe place, when you are out and when you are at home, so someone breaking in cannot also steal your car.
• Tuck in side mirrors and remove the stereo if you can.

Motorbikes/Scooters

• Always lock your bike and set the alarm if you have one.
• When leaving your bike, try to lock it to something secure. At home, you can fit special attachments to lock your bike to.
• Use a motorbike cover.
• Have the vehicle marked with its vehicle identification number (VIN).
• Take a photograph of the item so it can be easily identified as yours.

Bicycles

• Use a good bike lock. D locks or combination locks are best.
• Lock your bike to something secure, even in your yard or garage.
• Lock up the frame of your bicycle and take removable parts such as wheels and lights with you.
• Take a photograph of the item so it can be easily identified as yours.
