Flashback: One Year Ago...

Brac Campus opening

On Monday, 21 January 2008 the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) and the Civil Service College (CSC) realised their mission to offer access to tertiary education to the Sister Islands residents with the official opening of the Cayman Brac Campus.

Moses Kirkconnell, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Sister Islands, described the event as “a milestone in the development of our community”.

H.E the Governor Stuart Jack, in his brief remarks, described the event as a historic one.

The building is located opposite the District Administration Building and the courses are tailored to meet the requirements of the Sister Islands.

The opening of the UCCI Brac Campus was received with much enthusiasm.

Leader of Government Business Hon Kurt Tibbetts, Chief Officer in the Ministry of Education Angela Martins, and Chief Officer in the Portfolio of the Civil Service Mary Rodriguez were among the dignitaries in attendance.


Catholics break ground

On Monday, 21 January 2008 over 70 people attended a ground-breaking ceremony for a Catholic Church on Cayman Brac.

In attendance was Thelma Galbraith who came to work as a nurse in Stake Bay, Cayman Brac, and assisted with the advancement of Catholicism on the Island.

The Catholic community has been praying for many years for a church building, including Monsignor Meaney, Father Nash, Father Mike and many others. Special mention was made of Father Ray Bucon.


PWD Supervisor retires

After accumulating over three decades of service with the Public Works Department (PWD) in Cayman Brac, Field Supervisor (Roads) Myron Ryan retired on 11 January 2008. He served the PWD for 31 years.

About 80 co-workers and family members attended a farewell party in his honour.

He was presented with a plaque by District Commissioner Ernie Scott for his “outstanding service and dedication to the Cayman Islands Government”.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr Scott called it a bitter sweet moment.

At the ceremony, PWD Assistant Works Manager Justin Bodden presented Mr Ryan with a gift from his co-workers.
