Last year around this time students from Cayman Brac High School celebrated Teen Week (25-29 February) in Cayman Brac.

As was reported in The Bracker and Little Caymanian, students Troy Ebanks, Vanessa Scott, Jason Scott and Cameron Myrie took time out of their busy schedule to read to the youngsters at the Day Care Centre on Cayman Brac.

CBHS class teacher, Ventisha Conolly said: “The kids at the Day Care and students from CBHS really enjoyed themselves. The students realized that not everything you do has to be grandeur, as it can be as little as reading a story to someone and seeing them enjoy it, and you still feel rewarded.”

The children were eager to take part in the story hour and they were engaged in a participatory method where they were asked questions.

Neila Jones, Day Care Superintendent, encouraged the students to mingle with the children while allowing them to remain focused so as not to create the feeling of dominance, but ensuring that the mood was conducive to learning.

Community Development Officer, Annie Rose Scott was in charge of the evening’s activities and was pleased with the turnout even though some of the young people from the community were away on a sports assignment in Grand Cayman.

The week culminated in a karaoke concert at West End Park on Saturday evening where the teenagers had a truly enjoyable time.

Tisa Dixon, organizer for the event, said: “The young people were well behaved, no alcohol was present and no one wandered off the location, which all contributed to the success of the event and the week overall.”
