This year kids will get their own costume parade during Batabano |
With just less than two months until the start of Cayman Carnival Batabano 2006, organisers have said that this year’s event line-up will feature some changes from previous years.
Having started life as a single-day carnival nineteen years ago, Cayman Carnival Batabano has grown to encompass a full spectrum of events taking place over three weekends.
Fans of the street parades, an essential part of carnival, will be pleased to hear that there will be two separate street parades this year, taking place over two consecutive weekends. The Junior Carnival featuring school and youth groups will take place on Saturday 6 May, with the adult street parade to take place on Saturday 13 May.
“We are very excited to see carnival developing and growing – and invite all residents to come and enjoy the festivities,” said Donna Myrie, Chair of the Cayman Carnival Batabano Committee.
“We are delighted that the Junior Carnival will have its own parade this year. The full Committee will be on hand to ensure that the young people have a safe and enjoyable environment to take part in this important Caribbean tradition and hope this will encourage more schools and youth groups to participate.”
The proposed line-up of events is as follows:
Saturday 29 April – International Song Competition at the Mango Tree.
Saturday 6 May – Junior Carnival in George Town.
Thursday 11 May – Masquerade Fete at Pedro St. James
Friday 12 May - Friday Night Fete.
Saturday 13 May – Adult Street Parade from West Bay Road to George Town.
Sunday 14 May – Whine Down Beach Fete.
