LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Do something to help the young people

Monday, March 20, 2006

Dear Sir:

I have become very keen on reading about the progress in the Cayman Islands, especially since the devastation by Hurricane Ivan.

What I am not keen about is how can the Government not try to come up with a workable solution that address the needs of the young people. From what I can see, the situation is a disaster waiting to happen.

Aren’t there any land spaces designated to Government where a multi-purpose Youth facility can be built? I understand that the former Tower Building site is vacant, that’s a start. Put some money in and get the ball rolling.

If one watch the Commonwealth Games in Australia, one will see that the Government of that country has invested in sports at all levels. Not just sports, but other vocational and life skills can be taught to boost self confidence and maturity so the young people can become responsible adults.

Adults that are broad-minded and flexible, ready to take on changes and challenges. I agree with the Reverend Alson Ebanks in his quest for moral standards as well as Christian principles to be upheld in a small society as the Caymans. (I do believe he should be a columnist in the papers so he can reach the masses with his messages) Form what I can gather, too much TV and movies is being thrown at children as a means of “killing time” (Nothing better to do).

Gov, put a licence fee on the TV, then if the fee is not paid there will be something better to do. The Olympics is coming to London in 2012. It is estimated that over 100million people will attend the games so London is reeling for volunteers. It is understood that most Cayman Citizens don’t need visas to go to the UK. So get moving.

Apply on line on the 2012 website ask what do you need to do to become a volunteer. Seek sponsors, save money instead of wasting it on video games, DVD, sports cars and the sometimes unnecessary shopping trip to Miami. Start selling unwanted items on Ebay.

With reference to the recent bank robbery, one can only imagine this is not the work of old men or women. Some old people are agile and move quickly, but most are disciplined enough to know that they should not steal, much more, jump over a counter, hold a gun on people and make their escape in “Hollywood style” Parents, you know best.

If you know that your son or daughter was involved in this daring act, do the right thing, turn them in to the police. Do not partake of any of their gifts and God will bless you. They will hate you for now, but later they will come to realise that you have done them the best thing in life.

And for those doing time inside, don’t get despair and go back to doing wrong things. Make a difference. Start some vocational courses or study for GED, Diploma, Degree or even an Ambassador of your country.

Young people, there is no need to get involved in drugs and crime, hold your heads high and work for the betterment of yourselves and your country. Be proud of Cayman.

For the time being Cayman Net News, keep up the job you are doing it is brilliant work and have international credence. I would like to see a book done by you of suduko challenges over 100 pages. The young people may get inclined and outdo the old folks.

Also your cartoonist is a charm, perhaps he or she should publish a book for sale. Your T-Shirts can take a break for now. God Bless.

M Thompson-London
