LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Miscarriage of justice

Friday, March 31, 2006

Dear Sir:

The recent letter entitled Skeletons in Closets has created enough heated debate to rattle the bones of any skeleton.

The writer of the letter asks the RCIPS to throw away their pride and to ask for help from Scotland Yard to solve our major crimes from the past and to enquire into the failure to bring to justice a number of people for serious crimes.

Because of the reasons stated by the writer perhaps it might be a good idea to bring in external and independent assistance but I ask the question, why can’t we do it internally?

Tell me if I am wrong but the problems of unsolved crimes, the standard of investigations and the collapse of high profile criminal cases should have caught the eye of both the Office of the Chief Justice and the Office of the Attorney General and appropriate action taken at the time.

Did this happen some would ask? I believe it’s a miscarriage of justice when criminals are getting away with crime that can be solved and brought to justice. I also believe a miscarriage of justice can work the other way and innocent people can be sent to prison.

The writer suggests that Government make a clean sweep in the West Bay Police Station. That I believe would be totally unfair as a clean sweep needs to be across the whole judiciary and Law Enforcement Departments after an external investigation as suggested by the writer.
