Maples Foundation boosts Rugby
Monday, April 3, 2006
The development of rugby in the Cayman Islands received a major boost with the announcement that the Maples Foundation, part of the Maples and Calder group, will continue its support of sporting activities in the Cayman Islands with a donation of US$35,000 to the Cayman Junior Rugby Development Fund.
The funds will be used by the Cayman Rugby Sevens Academy to provide training for young Caymanian rugby players and give them the opportunity to participate in this increasingly popular sport.
Richard Adams, Technical Director of the Rugby Club, was full of praise for Maples’ investment in the future of Cayman rugby.
“The key mission of the Academy is to encourage more Caymanian youngsters to become involved in rugby. There has been a surge of interest in the sport in the Islands since 2000, particularly from young Caymanians, who are now being offered the chance to play rugby in government schools and we are keen to take this interest even further.
“We are very excited about the possibilities that Maples’ donation offers us. It gives us an opportunity to offer world-class training and support to the children, which we are confident will help to build the foundations for future national sides.”
Paul Lumsden, a partner of Maples and Calder, believes that the donation will do more than merely building a stronger local base for rugby.
“It is important for businesses to support initiatives in the community and we are delighted that Maples has been able to help the growing range of extra curricular activities offered to Cayman’s children by supporting the Cayman Rugby Sevens Academy. Rugby is an excellent team building sport and one that I am confident will teach children valuable skills both on and off the pitch.”
This donation is part of Maples’ initiative to provide financial support for education and youth activities.
