April is a busy month in terms of raising awareness of a number of issues; health issues and alcohol abuse in particular are being marked this month in the Cayman Islands, but it’s not all serious issues, the month is also celebrating the art of poetry.

To celebrate the importance of prose and rhyme, April has been designated as “Poetry Month” in the Cayman Islands and the observance is organised by the Cayman Islands Public Library, as part of its ongoing culture and literacy outreach programme, said Library Director Benedicta Conolly.

Celebrations will include poetry-related activities on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, with the intention of encouraging creative writing and the development of literary talent. For the second year, Grand Cayman will enjoy an “Evening of Poetry” at Dart Family Park, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 28 April.

The evening will feature displays and readings by children and adults of locally-written poetry. The Cayman Brac Public Library will celebrate Poetry Day on Saturday, 29 April, with a function at the Cayman Brac Library from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
