Police make significant arrests

Wednesday, April 12, 2006

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, (RCIPS) said it is keeping up the fight against crime and in particular drug related crime, following a report of another operation undertaken by officers which saw 8 people arrested and charged for various offences.

Another step under the recently launched ‘Operation Relentless’ banner, the action resulted in arrests for Possession of ganja with intent to supply; Possession of cocaine; Burglary; Consumption of drugs; Driving without a licence and insurance and Possession of a prohibited weapon.

“Tackling drug crime is a real priority for the RCIPS. We know that those involved in drugs are often involved in other crimes such as burglary and robbery and we are determined to catch those involved and bring them to justice,” said Chief Inspector Marlon Bodden who led this operation.

“Since the operation started there has been an obvious decline in the number of crime reports being made to the police. On one day we had no reports at all made in the West Bay district. This is undoubtedly due to the work we have been carrying out.

“Residents have also been noticing the increased police presence and patrols being carried out in various areas and we have had a very positive response from the community.”

The RCIPS said it will keep up the pressure on those involved in drug related crime and targeted operations based on current crime trends and patterns will continue.

Meanwhile officers have also charged a second man in relation to the recent Foster’s Food Fair robbery.

The man is 23-year-old Damian Dwayne Seymour of George Town and he appeared before the courts on Monday morning, 10 April.

He is facing charges of robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. It follows an incident which took place on Saturday, 4 March when two people reported being abducted by two men from Public Beach, West Bay Road and driven to the West Bay area.

On the same evening a robbery took place at Foster’s Food Fair in West Bay.
Mr. Seymour was remanded in custody.
