Foster’s League semis still in balance

Friday, April 14, 2006

Sunset and Money Express contest a ball
FC International won by a huge margin
Interceding for Scholars

With only a couple of teams still to compete their allotted number of games, two teams are still battling it out for the last semi-final berth in the Foster’s National League.

With the two Eastern Zone semi-final positions having fallen to Money Express and Roma, and Scholars having claimed the first Western Zone semi-final position weeks ago, there is only one place left.

With only one game to go, George Town find themselves two points up on rivals Latinos. With both Latinos and George Town having claimed wins last weekend, the two teams managed to pass Future, who had held second place, but were out of games and could only sit and watch as they were bumped out of semi-final contention.

Although Money Express could not improve on the dozen goals they scored in their game last weekend, the team still managed to take a convincing victory over Sunset, steadying themselves after a little end-of-league wobble a couple of games ago. The 4-1 victory leaves Money Express comfortably at the top of the Eastern Zone, and in good form for the semi-finals.

FC International delivered a very good showing when they took on Academy. FC were on fire, scoring nine goals against Academy’s two, to take the biggest victory of the weekend. The team also moved up to fourth in the Eastern Zone, overtaking Sunset in the process. This is however purely academic, as the two semi-final places in the Zone were already decided the previous weekend.

Tigers FC claimed their first point of the league, and against none than Scholars International. The bottom team in the Western Zone, Tigers had been without a single point from 14 games before they took on Scholars.

As Scholars had already secured a place in the semi-finals, they might not have been as attentive as they could have, but Tigers thoroughly deserved at least a measure of success as they salvaged a 1-1 draw.

With one semi-finals berth still up for grabs in the Western Zone, the Latinos versus East End and George Town versus North Side games were of vital importance to Latinos and George Town.

Latinos had a hard game against East End, and scraped by with a 1-0 victory, while George Town did not have things all their own way against North Side either, battling to a 2-1 victory. With both teams victorious, it means that the last semi-final position in the Western Zone will come down to the final round of games, as both teams still have one game left.

In the CIFA Women’s League, Future continued their dominance as they claimed a 6-0 victory over Elite SC. The win leaves Future undefeated at the top of the league, with Elite in a distant second place. Latinas claimed their third win of the season as they defeated the luckless Scholars International team, who are yet to score their first win of the season.

Sunset managed to solidify their third position in the league as they defeated George Town SC 2-1, which moved them to within three points of second placed Elite.

There will be no league games this weekend, but the second round of the CIFA FA Cup is sure to provide ample excitement over the Easter weekend.

On Saturday 15 April, Scholars International will take on Future FC at the Annex, while Academy SC will face Latinos FC in East End.

On Monday 17 April, Tigers FC will face North Side at the Annex, while Money Express and East End will clash in East End.

All games are set for kick-off at 3:45 pm.
