There are a lot of exciting developments on the horizon for the Cayman Islands Rugby Union. With the Diamond Law Associates International Series coming ever closer, the South Sound Rugby Club hosted a selection match between two teams of players all competing for a coveted spot on the Cayman Islands National Team for the Diamond Law series.

The outcome of the match, contested on 6 April, was not to be measured in points, but in the impression individual players made on the selectors, who were keeping a very close eye on proceedings.

The players were moved between teams, and from one position to another, in order to assess how different combinations played together, and to assess the adaptability of players. For the spectators, it was also a rare opportunity to see all the best rugby players in Cayman on the pitch all at once.

The match certainly produced some very good rugby, with players playing good, unselfish running rugby, fully aware that the selectors were not looking for prima donnas, but for team players.

Richard Adams, Technical Director of Rugby, said that the selectors were very pleased with the day.
“Many players performed well, especially several new players who inserted themselves strongly into contention for test places in the upcoming Diamond Law Associates International Series,” he said.

The team will be announced at a post-match reception after the first round of the Waterford Alex Alexander Cup knock-out competition on Saturday 22 April.

Cayman will host Canada under-21 and Bermuda in the Diamond Law Associates International Series, which will take place form 28 April to 6 May.

The first match will feature a Cayman Development XV against Canada under-21 on Friday 28 April. This will be followed on Sunday 30 April by Cayman versus Bermuda. On Tuesday 2 May, Canada under-21 will take on Bermuda, with the Canadians facing the Barbarians, composed of players from the Cayman and Bermuda teams, on 3 May.

The final match in the series, between Cayman and Canada under-21, will take place on Saturday 6 May.
