Family Fun Day to be held at The Rugby Club Saturday
Friday, April 21, 2006
The Cayman Rugby Union, in conjunction with the Waterford Private Residence Club and the Cayman Cancer Society, is delighted to announce the inaugural Waterford family and Cancer Society fun day to be held at the Cayman Rugby Union in South Sound on Saturday 22 April.
The occasion is particularly well timed as it also serves as the first round of the Alex Alexander Memorial Shield competition. Mr Alexander was a keen member of the Cayman Rugby Union who worked tirelessly to establish the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and eventually succumbed to the illness himself.
The Alex Alexander Cup and Shield carry his name in memory of the celebrated rugby player, husband and father.
The Waterford Private Residence club has stepped in as the sponsor of the Alex Alexander Memorial Cup and Shield this year. As an extra they have added a second Junior tournament to the calendar and the Waterford Youth Rugby Fest will also be held on Saturday 22 April, starting at 10:00 am and finishing at 2:00 pm. After this the senior players will take over, playing two matches to see who will progress in to the Cup Final on 27 May.
CRFU Technical Director Richard Adams said that, with Waterford offering to get involved with both junior and senior programmes, it seemed natural to look at a family day.
“With the competition being the Alex Alexander Memorial Shield, raising money for the Cancer Society was the final touch. We contacted them and they were very enthusiastic at the idea and so now we have a fun filled day for the whole family,” he said.
The day will include face painting, jumping castles, games, and other activities put on by the Cancer Society. Food for Thought is also doing an all-you-can-eat barbeque, with a dance in the evening to round off a perfect day out.
Heineken and Amstel will be providing beer specials throughout the day.
The day will cost $25 per adult, which certainly makes it excellent value for money.
“All profits will go to the Cancer Society so we hope to be able to donate between five and ten thousand dollars from the day. If you have never been to the Union, never seen a game then this will be the day to come on down and join in the fun,” said Adams.
Mr Craig Bosio, President of the Waterford Private Residence, said that they feel honoured to be part of such an event.
“We are always pleased when we can give back to the community that we do business in.
To be involved in this type of fund raising is a real privilege for us; the Alex Alexander Cup has given us a platform from which we can not only provide entertainment for families but also raise money every step of the way for the Cancer Society,” he added.
Mr Bosio added that he hoped people would come out to enjoy the day and support the cause.
“We hope that everybody comes down and sees what a truly great family event this is going to be and, we want to make it one of the best charity events of this year and many years to come.”
Christine Sanders, Manager of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, adds that she is delighted for the Society to be a part of this venture.
“The Cancer Society is currently engaged in a programme to promote increased physical activity in young people and their parents and this is a way of promoting this. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this program and to partner with the Rugby Union and the Waterford.”
