The National Gallery has been reaching out to serve the needs of at-risk youth, some of whom have not yet been touched with the richness of what the visual arts have to offer.
Recognizing the value of creativity in society, helping to unlock potential, raise aspirations and encourage self-expression the Art Outreach Bonaventure Programme has proven to be highly popular.
The purpose of this programme, which is sponsored annually by Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, is to artistically engage underserved youth in the boys’ home, the Gallery said.
The art sessions, led by artist Aston Ebanks, give the teenagers direction. Through the creative process, they can develop the skills of patience, persistence and commitment.
“Outreach comprises 30 percent of the work we do at the Gallery: we are not just about exhibitions, we are about grassroots activity within the community, across all socioeconomic levels,” said National Gallery director Nancy Barnard.
“It is wonderful that Rotary Grand Cayman sponsors this each year, particularly as they have been involved with the Bonaventure Boys Home from its inception decades ago.”
David Kirkaldy, president of Rotary Club of Grand Cayman added that the original Bonaventure Home was financed and built by Rotary so the organization has a long connection with the home and its efforts to assist young people.
“This donation from our club continues this tradition of assisting the Bonaventure Home and giving back to our community,” said Mr Kirkaldy.
