Cayman’s athletes went higher and further than ever before last weekend as they set a number of new national records – two national records and a junior national record.
In the Sun Belt Conference championships, Michael Letterlough spun the hammer out a distance of 184’8” to win the event, and add about a foot to his Cayman and Florida International University mark. He also placed eighth in the discus throw, with a season’s best mark of 146’10”.
Team-mate Ronald Forbes reached the finals in both the 110-metre hurdles with a time of 14.57 seconds, and the 400 hurdles in 54.29 seconds. He gained the eighth spot in the shorter event, but was unable to finish the race at the longer distance.
Over in the Conference USA championships, Omar Wright upped his Cayman national high jump record to 7’2 1/4”, tying the all-time best Rice University mark and gaining silver in the process.
The Morgan twins reduced their usual daily workload in the Ohio River Challenge at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, but the outcome was no less stellar. Carl took the 200-metre dash in 21.85, with Carlos fourth.
At double the distance it was Carlos with a 49.09 clocking, and he topped off the afternoon with one of the longest javelin throws in Cayman history, hurling the spear 206’2” for the win and a new national junior record.
The story does not end there. Stephon Johnson was at home at Lindenwood University for a sprint double, where he posted 10.97 and 21.80 marks.
South of the border, in Vera Cruz, Mexico, Kareem Streete-Thompson continued his return to full recovery as he placed sixth in the 100-metre dash in 10.50 seconds, credited with the same time as fifth-placed Eric Ndri of the Ivory Coast.
Upcoming competition for Letterlough, Wright, and the Morgan twins are all scheduled two weeks hence. Letterlough will be at Greensboro, North Carolina for the NCAA Division East Regional Championship, Wright will visit Austin, Texas for the Midwest Regionals, and Carl and Carlos Morgan will head out to Fresno, California for the NAIA Nationals.
