A fire which appears to have been started deliberately at the Shelter could have burned down the premises. Miss Jennifer, one of the Humane Society staff members tries to clean up. |
The Cayman Islands Humane Society Shelter is reeling from what appears to be yet another act of crime against the charity.
According to Clare Hasart from the shelter’s board of Directors, it was the manager’s decisive action that saved the Shelter from an arson attack.
“A fire occurred shortly after 10:00 pm on Friday evening at the animal shelter. Manager Sugar Evans, who resides on the premises, heard a car pull up and drive away at speed several seconds later,” Ms Hasart said.
“Her instinct led her to open her door and check everything was in order, and discovered the large wooden box designated for people to drop off items for the Thrift Shop was ablaze.
“She acted quickly and extinguished the flames, a passer-by called the fire service who arrived moments later. The police and RCIPS forensic teams attended and evidence was collected and several samples were taken for analysis. At this stage the police indicate they suspect the fire was intentional.”
This apparent act of arson is the latest in a number of crimes that have reportedly occurred recently at the Shelter premises.
There have been several burglaries within the Thrift Shop and a theft of a motor vehicle parked within the compound all occurring within the last month.
“The fire is the most disturbing because the Shelter is a wood construction and can easily be set alight, the building is also home to Sugar and numerous cats and dogs, and if Sugar hadn’t acted quickly on her instincts it is possible that many lives could’ve been lost,” Ms Hasart said.
The Humane Society said it would be stepping up its security measures, and the RCIPS have stated they will be keeping an eye on the premises.
