LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Increasing health awareness
Friday, May 26, 2006
Dear Sir:
Thank you for the opportunity to write in your esteemed newspaper.
I am happy to see so much awareness being given to diabetes and renal failure, and the issues being addressed at various levels.
I also want to make mention of the Powery family, and I’m thankful to see the support that they have been given.
Some years ago I lost a sister to renal kidney failure. At the time we were not given the option for my sister to have a kidney transplant. No one had advised the family about that option, and somehow it had never occurred to us. There was also the factor that where I am from, there was not much dialysis machines available for use. My sister was only 39 years old, and it has been 12 years since she died and I still think of her everyday.
I want to commend the Powery family for sticking by Nicholas, and especially his sister Keisha who has donated her kidney. I also want to commend all the people who have supported them in the barbecues and with other financial support.
I want to thank the Government of the Cayman Islands and the various medical charities and organizations that are trying to bring more awareness to the importance of healthy living. I encourage others in whatever way assistance can be given towards dialysis machines, to do so, as lives can be saved, or a better standard of living can be had, with this machine.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to say these few words.
Jennifer Cassar
