Suspect plays ‘hide and seek’ with cops

Friday, May 26, 2006

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, (RCIPS) were given the run around by a 23-year-old man who is currently in police custody this week.

The man was arrested on suspicion of burglary after he engaged officers from the RCIPS in a game of ‘hide and seek’ during an incident which took place on 23 May.

At around 3.30 pm police received reports of a man acting suspiciously in the garden of a property on West Bay Road near the Cayman Reef Resort.

Officers from the Uniform Support Group (USG) responded and located a man fitting the description who when he saw the officers ran through Cayman Reef property into the carpark of Royal Palms.

PC Darren Coles gave chase and the man attempted to hide from him in the bushes before making off again through Coral Caymanian and over the fence into the West Indian Club. Here he attempted to hide for a second time.

However, his efforts were unsuccessful and the chase continued across West Bay Road to the back of the Galleria Plaza where the suspect took cover in bushes and refused to come out.

K9 Unit member ‘Monty’, a five year old German Shepherd trained in searching for suspects, was deployed with his handler PC McField to locate the suspect. The man was arrested shortly afterwards.
Subsequent enquiries revealed the property on West Bay Road had been broken into and a number of items taken.

The RCIPS said that it welcomes the opportunity to investigate reports of suspicious activity and asks that residents continue to keep an eye open for anything out of the ordinary in their community.

“If anything is spotted we ask that it be reported it to police immediately,” said the RCIPS.

Anyone with information relating to criminal activity in the Cayman Islands is asked to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 800 TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and could be entitled to a cash reward should their information lead to an arrest.
