LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Do you have to print unintelligible religious letters?
Tuesday, May 30, 2006
Dear Sir:
I know that sometimes a newspaper can struggle to fill its pages, but do you really have that little news that you have to print these long and unintelligible religious letters? I try to read some of them, but the writers are clearly insane.
We all know that these islands have a strong (maybe too strong) devotion to the church dating back many years. However, in the modern world such ingrained beliefs are seen as threats. Anyone researching the possibility of investing in the Cayman Islands will read stories of racism, high costs, discriminatory taxes, and unworkable labour laws will have serious doubts. Reading the insane rants by a number of people week after week and studying the control the church has on commerce, such as opening hours and licensing laws, any potential investor will look elsewhere very quickly.
I read good ideas about how to improve the economic situation, why won’t the ‘powers that be’ take them onboard? The newspapers of Cayman could do their bit too. They could stop printing letters from religious hot heads. The question of how to put food in the bellies of our children and shoes on their feet are far more important than how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. David Bodden
