LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Water please?
Wednesday, June 7, 2006
Dear Sir:
One understands that officialdom may not wish to appear to be encouraging illegal migration. However, at what point do Christians plead the cause of fellow human beings who NEED a drink of water?
Although it was not a cruise ship, it was still a boat with fellow human beings! Although they may be undocumented migrants, they are still PEOPLE! What will it take for Christians to become interested in the people on this boat?
Would that we hear the Christ of the Gospel? “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you visited me…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers of mine, you did for me.” Read Matthew 25.
Who will plead the cause of the weak, vulnerable, and forgotten in our midst? Who will see Christ in those who suffer? How long will we simply rely on the phrase “Christian Country?”
Lord help us to be your hand of mercy even to those who beg for our mercy.
Amen.
Fr. Sean Major-Campbell
