LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Boring letters

Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Dear Sir:

I read with interest that some readers feel certain letters are boring and rambling.

Two thoughts, one is that, like the television, letters have an “on/off switch” -- stop reading and move on.

Second, and most importantly, think about ten years ago. Letters to the editor were 95% “name withheld”. The range of topics discussed was very limited. There was no real “freedom of speech” in Cayman for ex-pats, status holders or anyone criticising the Government. In Cayman it was “no freedom of speech with fear of retribution”.

I can personally attest to the fact that I was called after writing letters to the editor and signing them and threatened that I would not receive any more work permits unless I backed off.

Bottom line Cayman has come a long way. I urge everyone to take a proactive interest in your country, write letters, voice your opinions, find answers and promote “freedom of speech”. Remember there is always an “on/off switch.

All the best Cayman
